teenage dream

This is way better than that fucking viral video of that kid with dwarfism trying to lip sync.

If you have half an hour to kill (which I know you do, since you were bored enough to come to this blog...), then I highly recommend you check this documentary on everyone's favourite Gregg Gillis. Even though it's really more of an extended music video for a mixtape. Saw him at Sled Island, and damn...those toilet paper blowers are awesome.
Thanks to JB for the heads up on this

Gold Panda

I heard this song on friday, and it's been on repeat ever since. And I don't know why. There's something irritatingly catchy about it, but I can't put my finger on it. Just something that makes me want to press the Repeat button on iTunes until it displays the Repeat 1 logo....and just let it play.
A little about Gold Panda...
"Gold Panda is a left-field producer and remixer called Derwin who makes instrumental soundtracks to half-remembered, dreamy summer days. He scours charity shops for old records and VHS tapes to turn into distorted samples, and wraps them in minimal, warm beats.
He is obsessed with Japan and its culture, and once sold his entire record collection to pay for a Japanese diploma at the School of Oriental and African Studies, before moving there for a year."

K I'm in a blogging mood right now. But if you like Phoenix, I think you'll really like The Pass. Their new album, Burst, is out September 21st, but you can check it out now.

One of the few bands that I'm genuinely excited about, and I think will blow up the scene pretty soon. Vultures is solid gold.

BURST by The Pass

A lot of hype following Swedish band Junip, thanks to their lead singer, the one and only Jose Gonzalez. They gave away their new Fields EP for free on Sept. 14th, and in case you missed it, be sure to check this. Favourite so far is Sweet and Bitter, it hooks you from the beginning.

Seems like DJ Skeet Skeet is on board with the Naked and Famous too.

"Really liked this song but it fell a little flat in my sets so I spent a little time fixing it up for our party MEGA."

Beloved Brooklyn duo Matt and Kim just released this new track, off their new album set to be released 11/2. They're a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine, cause they're so feel-good. But enough of that, check/download the new track. Digging the funky tuba bassline. Such a good end of summer beat.

dust it off and jerk it

Okay special shout out to my boy kev, he introduced me to Thunderheist a couple summers ago, and when I heard the first beat drop on this, I knew I had to post it. Check the ORIGINAL. Never really heard of SHOOPS, but they're from MTL, so shout out to some Canadian homeboys. This shit is a nice end-of-summer banger. Now stfu and jerk it.

No, not the denim.
The band from New Zealand. Digging this track. Just kinda fun shit.

On a sidenote, Box.net took down Fuck You by Cee-Lo. How ironic.

dog days of summer

Today in Toronto, it was 38 with humidity. That is ridiculous. So with all my newfound time spent indoors with air conditioning, I thought I'd get back into posting music.
Just got back from Buffalo where my friend showed me this song. Definitely a light, feelgood summer song. Don't let the bands name fool you, they're pretty good.

also, I promise that I'll start posting stuff that's been collecting on my computer all summer.

sky ferreira x miike snow

I guess after turning 20, I can't handle all those bangers anymore. My bones are just too brittle. So for nowm enjoy Sky Ferreira, one of the most talented 17 year olds in the game, takes one of my favourite tracks of '09 and makes a bare bones cover. this is pretty fantastic.

return of jj

Most of you are in the middle of exams, and need some easy listening. Even though you try and tell yourself that Enter Sandman helps get you psyched up for studying, we all know it doesn't actually help. So here's some easy listening, courtesy of jj, an artist that I've featured beforeand who are touring with The XX. Seriously, enough of the double-letters. But this is a cover of.....................BIRTHDAY SEX. I know right? Whatever, it's chill.

P.s. I know it's 420. Go listen to Bob Marley or whatever it is that you kids do these days.

japanese gentlemen

okay, completely not music related in any way.....but guys, check this out. This site is devoted to teaching you how to be like the Dos Equis Most Interesting Man in the World. But it starts off with some pretty simple stuff, like how to properly iron your shirt. To the guys reading this, I know you all like to look like scruffy lumberjacks these days, but learn how to be a gentleman too. You can start by checking out this video, and then following this LINK (how to shine your shoes, make cocktails, party tricks....you name it. just follow the left hand navigation bar).

who knew watching a guy ironing could be entertaining? i guess i'm just nerdy like that. but seriously guys, stop rocking wrinkly shit all the time. you look like that guy on the corner of 97th.

Damn I love this guy. But then again, who doesn't? The lyrics to this track are hilarious, but so oddly catchy. Check the LIVE VIDEO of this, he spits hot fiyah like Dylan, but with an incredible wig. Looks like such a rowdy show. Or in the words of Jeron Wilson........this shit is buttery.
And if you haven't peeped the previous stuff on Macklemore, check it HERE.

hayley williams x B.o.B................huh?

I'm a big fan of Atlanta rapper B.o.B. aka Bobby Ray, and I'm excited for his April 27th release of B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray. This was leaked today from that album, featuring Hayley Williams, the singer from every teen fem-punk's favorite band, Paramore.
Definitely an interesting collabo, but I'm digging it. Not for everyone, but you win some, you lose some.

lazy sunday

It's a beautiful day outside, and this kind of weather always brings out the indie kid in me. So kick up your feet and chill out to this great edit of Heartbeats, by The Knife, covered by Jose Gonzalez. He's of Argentine descent, but is Swedish, and I found this remix on a Japanese blog. WTF?

And yes, this was the music video where they drpoped 250,000 bouncy balls down San Fran.

Dearest readers, I need your help

Okay so most of you know that I'm down with WeSC, and they released this film a few months ago, but I can't place the song.
Any of you know what song it is? Drop me a comment.

William Hung reference anyone?
Anyways, Chiddy Bang of MGMT-sampling fame just released Air Swell, the followup mixtape to The Swelly Express.
Definitely some cool samples on this mixtape. Hey London samples Hot Chip's One Life Stand, Breakfast is from Kate Nash's Skeleton Song, and Shooter samples La Roux's 2009 banger Bulletproof.

Download the entire mixtape HERE.

Am I the only one who found this hilarious? Almost as good as death metal rooster.

And I'm glad that SOMEONE out there went on a downloading storm last night. I woke up to 30+ emails. After that, I went and disabled email notifications. Enjoy the music.

07 April 2010

It's pretty obvious that I've been away from blogging for a while. Why? I just got sick of posting stuff that I wasn't truly in to, but rather stuff that was popular. I'm talking about Top40 remixes and stuff like that. I don't even dig that music, but I put it up because everyone wanted it.
Instead, from now on, I'm going to try and stay true to my roots and only put up stuff that I genuinely enjoy. If you don't like it, and would rather hear stuff about my shawtay being like a melody in my head, tough shit. Go party on limewire.
Also, stop being creepers, and let me know what you like, and what you don't. Drop some comments or something. I'm probably also taking this blog in a bit of a different direction, since the e-police are committing hate crimes on music blogs, I'm going to diversify a bit. I'll still do music, but throw in some other stuff too.

Now that I'm done being a whiny internet bitch, peep this new track by Charles Hamilton. I listened to his mixtapes after I first heard him on Entourage, but didn't really dig a lot of his stuff. He's pretty hit or miss for me, but this new track is definitely a hit. A mellow yellow track, in honor of a family member that he was staying with, but didn't know, and saw the impact of their death on his family.

P.s. I still don't get why all his mixtapes and stuff are related to Sonic the Hedgehog. Seriously. Why.

Now you may be saying, "holy shit they all died?". well girl you just got punk'd.
My boy Grant (thanks city slicker) hooked me up with this bundle of joy....and let me tell you, it's SLAYING the scene. It's by this guy called Speaky, and it's good stuff. Let's just say he samples a lot of stuff. I'm talking about stuff like Band of Horses, Lil Wayne, Blink 182, Lady Gaga, Verve, Busta Rhymes, Coldplay, RHCP, 50 Cent, Billy Talent, Dr. Dre, Vitamin C (yeah...Graduation...you remember that shit.).....you name it, it's in there.

I know stuff like White Panda is blowing up right now, and everyone can mix shit on their comp in their basement, but you definitely should check this out. The thing with this stuff is, it becomes outdated so quickly. Remember when Girl Talk dropped Night Ripper? You rarely hear half of the stuff he samples anymore, other than the classics.
But enough talk, let the drummer kick. I know this is going to be on repeat alllllllllllll through st. patty's parties.

p.s. in case you missed it click E-603 and SUPER MASH BROS. to download their mix albums fo' free!

So you may be wondering, "Hey Matt, what's the deal with your blog right now? Why did your Google ads disappear? Why doesn't the Lupe Fiasco track work?"

The answer to your question is: shit's getting hot.
Blogspot is reportedly deleting music blogs left right and center, and Google thinks my account activities are suspicious, and Box.net has me under watch for infringing copyright laws.
So.......if anyone has any suggestions, leave a comment. Should i switch to Wordpress?

But an orchestral version of Run this Town? With football highlights? Shit son.

jj feat. Lil Wayne

So jj is a band from Sweden, and this song has been on nonstop repeat for the past 3 days. This song is freshhhh, it's got some hip hop vibes (like Lil Wayne), and some dreamy artsy fartsy stuff too. It's got a weird intro, but stick with it, and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
And for all you ultra trendsters, jj is going on tour with The Xx. What's up with repeating letters for band names?

Remember the first post I made on here about Make the Girl Dance?

They're back.
with 30K.
And they want to party. And boy, do they love cocaine.

on a side note, at 3:40, when they feature the Spearmint Rhino....my bro picked up a stripper there. And didn't have to pay. Why did he get all the awesome genes?

03 February 2010

Cudders gets too much attention on here. Seriously, 2 posts in a row?
Come on, I'm not the only one out there who loves to jump on this hipsters latest tracks. This was from a few years back, but it was finally released in good quality, so here it is, in all it's glory. With a nice Bob Dylan sample, this track takes it nice and easy, and it's definitely mellow yellow.

02 February 2010

My boy TZhou hooked me up with this funky fresh mix of the crowd favourite, Kid Cudi himself. You best be downloading this shit.

And in case you were wondering why the Sedin twins are up here, it's because;
1. He's in Vancouver right now
2. We're just like these point-getting-fiends when we're on the ice together. watch out.

Okay so I heard this song a while back, but didn't think much of it. Then on Friday night, while at a super seedy strip club (I know, don't hate), the "DJ"/MC played a mix of this song, right in between some Poison and Beyonce.
Anyways, Dragonette's a pretty dope band from Toronto, and I remember when I saw them a few years ago, they were pretty funkin'. And let's just say that Michael Van She does a helluva good job mixing this, adding some serious flair to this track, while keeping the original intact.
This song is on heavy repeat for me, and it should be for you too. Definitely one of the best tracks of 2010 so far.

It's that day of the week again. You should be wearing your Sunday-best at church with your parents, but instead, you're nursing that throbbing headache, and wondering who that dude/chick/both/unidentifiable person is beside you in bed. Let's look back at one of 2009's funniest films, The Hangover. DJ JEM remixed one of the funniest scenes from that movie, so that makes it awesome, even if the song blows (cocaine...get it?)

Ahhhh yes. MGMT. Formerly the Management. Probably one of my favourite songs of the past few years, I remember listening to Kids for the entirety of the summer of 2007 with C-Beck, after discovering them from this video. This was before they even had a drummer. Kickin' it old school.

Anyways, fast forward to 2010, where my interest in dubstep has grown exponentially in the past week. I don't know why, but it has. So let's mix dubstep and MGMT. There are thousands of remixes of this song, and only a few really get me groovin', but this is one of them. Dig it.

Even though Katy Perry is engaged to mega-douche Russell Brand, her songs still make me wanna crank dat soulja boy. And let's be honest, Timbaland just knows how to make the bitches drop their panties. But enough about those cats, Chew Fu drops another dope edit, and it's definitely worth a listen. or 12, according to my iTunes. in the past day. don't hate.

This track is courtesy of the the swedes.....Mille. And it get's me jacked. For some reason, this song really makes me want to air guitar, and just shred. It's kinda got like an 80's feel to it, where it would be the backing track to Rocky training or something, while pounding on meat.
But if you know me, there's nothing like a good instrumental track to get you pumped up. This is some fergalicious shit. Welcome to the weekend.

I think every male out there wishes he was Tiger Woods. Athlete. Sex god. All-around awesome son of a bitch. But now you can live his life through this song by Maino, a great song to bump to with ur boiz.

Hmmm so apparently Tswift x U2 is "so cheesy and smoochy", and was successful in "ruining with or without you", so I guess I'll have to post something a little more ballsy. CLF, this is for you. A hard-hitting Jay-Z/young hova/h to the izzo/jiggaman/iceberg slim/j hova that will slap you in the face around 2:40. A nice throwback to the original track. This deserves to be pumped through quality speakers, not the speakers of your ultra-trendy macbook/free headphones included with your ipod

No, I'm not talking about that Powerman 5000 song. Did I just really outdate myself? Probably. But this is from a mixtape from stereogum and team9, and most of it isn't that fantastic, but this track blew my brains out, kind of like when you watch Avatar in imax 3D. Speaking of Avatar, read THIS .
Anyways, Taylor Swift. So hot right now. U2. So hot right now. Together? Double the hot shtuff. Everyones favourite, Love Story, mashed with the instrumentals of With or Without You. I think it's impossible not to like this song.

Let's kick things off with an flashback track that's still gold in my books. Know why? Cause it's a cover of an even older track, that everyone loves.

The legendary GnR. Guns n Roses baby. I still have my old Use Your Illusion tapes somewhere too. Anyways, dig it, it was covered by Flat Pack, and then edited by Mylo, a big name in the game. An angelic voice for a classic, with a funkadelic beat? Why not.
